Chapter 11 - THE DAY EMILY CARTER SPOKE

The court hearing took place on a cold morning in February.
Derek sat across the room wearing an expensive suit.
He looked polished.
Confident.
Almost bored.
For a moment, seeing him made my stomach tighten.
Then Sarah touched my arm.
"Ready?"
I nodded.
When I testified, my voice trembled.
I described the financial control.
The threats.
The bruises.
The documents I'd been pressured to sign.
The fear that followed me into every room of our home.
Derek's attorney challenged my memory.
Questioned my motives.
Suggested I was exaggerating.
I took a breath.
Then answered each question.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Truthfully.
At one point, I looked toward Derek.
He was staring at me.
The familiar warning smile appeared.
The one that used to make me apologize.
This time, I looked away.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I no longer needed his approval.
When I finished, Sarah smiled.
"You did well."
I began crying.
Not because the hearing was easy.
Because I'd spoken.
In a room full of strangers.
May you like
With Derek listening.
And nobody had been able to silence me.
