Chapter 15 - SHE DECIDES

Three years after the night I hid beneath Alexander Moretti's desk, he asked me to marry him.
He did it in my office.
Not in a mansion.
Not in a restaurant.
Not in a room full of powerful men.
In the small space I'd built with my own hands.
I was finishing paperwork when he arrived.
He carried a bouquet of white flowers.
I smiled.
"What's the occasion?"
He looked nervous.
That alone made me laugh.
"Alexander Moretti, are you afraid of something?"
He smiled.
"Very."
I raised an eyebrow.
"What?"
He took a small velvet box from his pocket.
My breath caught.
"Emily."
His voice trembled.
"Three years ago, you came into my office barefoot and frightened."
My eyes filled.
"You asked me not to tell your husband where you were."
I nodded.
He continued.
"I thought I was protecting you."
He paused.
"But you taught me something far more important."
I swallowed.
"What?"
"That protection without freedom is just another form of control."
Tears slipped down my cheeks.
Alexander knelt.
"I love the woman you are."
His voice softened.
"Not because you needed saving."
He smiled.
"But because you found the courage to save yourself."
I covered my mouth.
"I love your strength. Your kindness. Your determination. The way you refuse to let anyone make decisions for you."
He opened the box.
Inside was a simple diamond ring.
"Emily Carter."
He took a breath.
"Will you marry me?"
I stared at him.
The man who had once been feared across Chicago.
The man who had learned to question his own power.
The man who had never asked me to become smaller.
Then I smiled.
"Yes."
Alexander laughed.
Then stood and kissed me.
I wrapped my arms around him.
For a moment, the world felt quiet.
Safe.
Mine.
We married six months later.
The ceremony took place in a garden overlooking Lake Michigan.
Hannah stood beside me.
Sarah attended.
Officer Collins sent flowers.
Several women I'd helped through my business came to celebrate.
Alexander waited beneath an arch of white roses.
When I reached him, he took my hands.
His eyes were wet.
"You look beautiful."
I smiled.
"So do you."
He laughed.
During the vows, Alexander spoke first.
"I promise to love you without controlling you."
His voice trembled.
"To listen when you speak."
"To respect your choices."
"And to stand beside you, never above you."
My eyes filled.
Then I spoke.
"Alexander."
I smiled.
"Three years ago, I was afraid to say what I wanted."
I paused.
"I had forgotten what it felt like to make a decision without fear."
Tears slipped down my cheeks.
"But you gave me something simple."
I looked into his eyes.
"Space."
"Space to choose."
"Space to heal."
"Space to become myself again."
Alexander squeezed my hands.
I continued.
"I promise to love you with honesty."
"To stand beside you."
"And to remind you that real strength isn't about making people obey."
I smiled.
"It's about helping them feel safe enough to be free."
We kissed.
The guests applauded.
And for the first time in my life, I didn't feel like a woman being given away.
I felt like a woman choosing her future.
Later that evening, Alexander and I stood on the terrace overlooking the lake.
The water shimmered beneath the moonlight.
He wrapped an arm around my waist.
"Happy?" he asked.
I smiled.
"Very."
He kissed my forehead.
I looked toward the garden.
Three years earlier, I'd been hiding beneath a stranger's desk.
Barefoot.
Terrified.
Convinced that my life belonged to someone else.
Now I had a business.
A home.
Friends.
A future.
And a husband who understood that love meant respecting my freedom.
Alexander looked at me.
"What are you thinking?"
I smiled.
"About the first time we met."
He laughed softly.
"You were hiding under my desk."
"I know."
He shook his head.
"I'd never seen anyone look so frightened."
I looked at him.
"And I'd never heard anyone say what you said."
His expression softened.
"She decides."
I nodded.
"Three words."
I smiled through tears.
"Three words that reminded me I was still a person."
Alexander kissed my hand.
Then whispered:
"You always were."
I leaned against him.
The wind moved gently across the lake.
Music drifted from the garden.
And for the first time, I understood that the happiest ending wasn't simply finding someone who loved me.
It was becoming someone who could love herself.
Someone who could say no.
Someone who could say yes.
Someone who could walk away.
Someone who could stay.
Someone who could choose.
And this time, when I looked toward the future, I didn't ask what Derek would allow.
I didn't wonder whether I deserved happiness.
I didn't wait for permission.
Because the answer had always belonged to me.
May you like
She decides.
And finally, I did.
