Alexander's involvement in the financial investigation created problems for his organization.
Some associates wanted him to handle Derek privately.
Others believed involving authorities was a mistake.
Alexander refused.
He provided relevant records through his attorneys.
He cooperated with investigators where appropriate.
And began reviewing the criminal operations that had shaped his reputation.
It wasn't simple.

But he began taking responsibility.
One evening, he called me.
"Emily?"
"Yes?"
"I wanted you to hear something from me before you read it elsewhere."
My stomach tightened.
"What?"
"I'm stepping away from several businesses."
I was silent.
He continued.
"Some operations weren't legitimate. I won't pretend otherwise."
I looked toward the window.
"Why are you telling me?"
"Because if we're going to know each other, I don't want you learning the truth from headlines."
I swallowed.
"Alexander, I can't be part of a life built on fear."
He was quiet.
Then said:
"I know."
I closed my eyes.
"And I won't ask you to."
For a long moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I whispered:
"Good."
Alexander exhaled.
"Good."
It wasn't a promise of romance.
It wasn't a declaration.
It was something quieter.
