Chapter 14 - THE VERDICT AND THE NEW BEGINNING

The financial case against Derek eventually reached trial.
Evidence showed that he had used forged documents and concealed accounts to conduct fraudulent transactions.
He was convicted on significant financial charges.
The court also considered the evidence relating to his threats and coercive behavior through the appropriate proceedings.
The outcome didn't erase what happened.
But it established something important.
Derek had not been the innocent husband he pretended to be.
And I had not been the unstable woman he described.
After the proceedings, I stood outside the courthouse.
Sarah smiled.
"It's over."
I looked toward the sky.
"Not everything."
She nodded.
"No."
I took a breath.
"But the part where he gets to decide who I am?"
I smiled.
"That's over."
A few months later, I opened a small financial coaching business.
I called it:
HER OWN ACCOUNT
The office had pale green walls.
A comfortable waiting area.
And a sign above the door that read:
Your money. Your choices. Your future.
My first client was a woman named Rachel.
She sat across from me with trembling hands.
"My husband says I can't survive without him."
I looked at her.
For a moment, I saw myself.
The navy dress.
The bruised wrist.
The bare foot.
The stranger's desk.
Then I smiled gently.
May you like
"Let's look at your options."
And I began helping her build a plan.
