Chapter 9 - THE BETRAYAL HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT

The truth about Daniel arrived in a folder.

Marco placed it on Adrienne's desk.

I stood beside the window.

Adrienne opened it.

Read the first page.

Then looked at me.

“Elizabeth.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

He hesitated.

“Daniel has been involved in financial transactions connected to Victor Sloane.”

I stared.

“What kind of transactions?”

Adrienne looked down.

“Payments.”

My heart raced.

“For what?”

Marco answered.

“Information.”

Silence.

I looked at him.

“What information?”

Marco hesitated.

Then said:

“Information about Adrienne's movements.”

My stomach dropped.

I stared.

“Daniel helped plan the shooting?”

Adrienne's expression hardened.

“We don't know that yet.”

I looked toward the lake.

Then whispered:

“He came to the bar.”

Adrienne nodded.

“Yes.”

“He knew you were there.”

Silence.

Then I looked back.

“And he walked toward me right before the lights went out.”

Adrienne went still.

For the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.

May you like

Not for himself.

For me.
