Chapter 8 - A KISS BETWEEN TWO STORMS

The first kiss happened during a thunderstorm.

We were standing on the balcony.

Rain moved across Lake Michigan.

Lightning flashed beyond the skyline.

Adrienne stood beside me.

Close enough that I could feel the warmth of his body.

I looked at him.

“Can I ask you something?”

He nodded.

“Anything.”

I swallowed.

“Why haven't you kissed me?”

His expression changed.

For a moment, he looked genuinely surprised.

Then he smiled faintly.

“Because I wasn't sure you wanted me to.”

My heart raced.

I looked at him.

Then whispered:

“I do.”

Adrienne stepped closer.

Slowly.

Carefully.

He touched my cheek.

Then stopped.

“Elizabeth.”

“Yes?”

“Are you sure?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

He kissed me.

Softly.

Gently.

Nothing like the possessive kisses Daniel used to give me when he wanted to prove something.

This kiss asked.

It didn't demand.

When Adrienne pulled away, he rested his forehead against mine.

“Tell me if you want me to stop.”

I smiled through tears.

“I don't.”

And beneath the Chicago thunderstorm, I realized something terrifying.

I was falling in love with a man whose world could destroy mine.
