Chapter 7 - THE MAFIA BOSS WHO READ HER BOOK

Adrienne began spending more time with me.
Not because he had to.
Because he wanted to.
At least, that was what I hoped.
We talked about books.
Music.
The city.
His childhood.
My years teaching writing classes at Lakeshore Community College.
One evening, he found me sitting beside the fireplace with my laptop.
“Working?”
I nodded.
“Trying.”
He smiled.
“What's the problem?”
I sighed.
“Chapter twelve.”
He sat opposite me.
“What's wrong with it?”
I hesitated.
Then answered:
“My heroine doesn't know whether to trust the man she's falling in love with.”
Adrienne's expression changed.
I looked down.
He smiled faintly.
“Sounds complicated.”
I laughed.
“You have no idea.”
He leaned back.
“What does she want?”
I considered.
Then whispered:
“To believe he's different.”
Adrienne studied me.
“And what does she need?”
I looked up.
He held my gaze.
“The truth,” I whispered.
Adrienne nodded slowly.
“Then give her that.”
May you like
My heart tightened.
Because I wasn't sure whether we were still talking about fiction.
