Adrienne arrived twenty minutes later.
He crossed the parking garage without speaking.
When he saw me, his expression changed.
He stopped.
Then approached slowly.
“Elizabeth.”
I looked up.
He knelt beside me.
“Are you hurt?”
I shook my head.
He closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked as though he might break.
Then he whispered:
“I'm sorry.”
I stared.
“For what?”
“For bringing this danger into your life.”
My throat tightened.
I touched his face.
“Adrienne.”
He looked at me.
I continued.
“You didn't cause Victor to choose violence.”
His jaw tightened.
“But my world gave him a reason to target you.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
Silence.
Then I whispered:
“So what are you going to do about it?”
He looked at me.
