Vincent offered Claire a consulting contract.
He wanted her help reconstructing the gala's event timeline.
She had access to vendor schedules, delivery logs, and seating arrangements.
Claire listened carefully.
Then asked, “Why me?”
“Because you know the event better than anyone.”
She considered that.
“And because Ethan knows me?”
Vincent didn't answer immediately.
Then nodded.
“Yes.”
Claire leaned back.
“I won't be used to get to him.”
Vincent met her eyes.
“I understand.”
She shook her head.
“No, I need you to really understand.”
He waited.
“I spent two years being treated like a tool in someone else's life.”
Her voice trembled.
“I'm not doing it again.”
Vincent's expression softened.
“Then don't.”
She stared.
He continued.
“You can refuse the contract.”
Claire looked down.
Then asked, “What if I want to help?”
“Then we'll make sure you have independent legal advice and clear boundaries.”
She smiled faintly.
“That's a surprisingly reasonable answer.”
