Chapter 6 - A DANGEROUS INVITATION
The next morning, Claire received a phone call.
“Miss Bennett?”
“Yes?”
“This is Marcus Bell. Mr. Hail would like to speak with you.”
Claire sat upright.
“About what?”
“The Harborlight gala.”
She hesitated.
Then said, “I'm working.”
Marcus paused.
“Of course.”
Claire almost smiled.
Apparently Vincent Hail wasn't accustomed to being told someone was busy.
“Tell him I can meet at six.”
Marcus sounded surprised.
“I'll let him know.”

At six o'clock, Claire arrived at a small restaurant overlooking the Hudson.
Vincent stood when she approached.
“Claire.”
She smiled.
“Vincent.”
He pulled out a chair.
She sat.
Then looked around.
“Do you own this place?”
“Yes.”
“Of course you do.”
He laughed.
Claire leaned forward.
“Before we start, I have one rule.”
Vincent raised an eyebrow.
“Only one?”
“For now.”
He smiled.
“Go ahead.”
“No secrets that affect my safety.”
His expression became serious.
“Agreed.”
She studied him.
Then nodded.
“Good.”

For the first time, Vincent Hail looked like a man who had met someone he couldn't intimidate.
And liked it.
