Chapter 15 - THE LAST FORTY SECONDS

Two years after the Grand Astor gala, Claire stood beneath the chandeliers of a small historic ballroom in Manhattan.

The room was filled with flowers.

White roses.

Eucalyptus.

Soft candlelight.

And the people who had stood beside her through the hardest years of her life.

Vincent waited at the altar.

He wore a black tuxedo.

His dark hair was touched with silver.

And his expression was unusually nervous.

Claire smiled.

For a moment, she remembered the first time she'd seen him.

Standing alone beside a dance floor.

Holding a glass he hadn't drunk.

Watching the orchestra.

She had approached him because she was desperate.

Because Ethan was coming.

Because she needed forty seconds of safety.

Now she walked toward him because she wanted a lifetime.

---

When she reached the altar, Vincent took her hands.

His eyes filled.

“Claire.”

She smiled.

“Vincent.”

The officiant began.

Then Vincent spoke.

“Claire, the first time we met, you asked me for forty seconds.”

The guests laughed softly.

Vincent smiled.

“I thought I was doing you a favor.”

He shook his head.

“But I didn't understand that you were about to change my life.”

Claire's eyes filled.

He continued.

“You taught me that love isn't about control.”

“It's about trust.”

“It's about honesty.”

“It's about giving someone the freedom to choose you.”

His voice trembled.

“And being grateful when they do.”

Claire began crying.

Then spoke.

“Vincent, when I met you, I was afraid of someone from my past.”

She took a breath.

“I thought I needed a stranger to help me escape.”

She smiled through tears.

“But you helped me remember that I was capable of standing on my own.”

Vincent's eyes filled.

“You never asked me to become smaller so you could feel powerful.”

She squeezed his hands.

“And you never treated my independence as a threat.”

Her voice softened.

“I choose you.”

“Not because I'm afraid.”

“Not because I need someone to protect me.”

“But because I love the man you became when you decided that honesty mattered more than power.”

They exchanged rings.

Then the officiant pronounced them husband and wife.

Vincent kissed Claire.

And the ballroom erupted in applause.

---

Later that evening, the orchestra began playing a slow song.

Vincent approached Claire.

He held out his hand.

“Mrs. Hail.”

She smiled.

“Claire Bennett-Hail.”

He laughed.

“Of course.”

She looked at his hand.

Then at him.

“Are you asking me to dance?”

He smiled.

“I'm negotiating.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“Terms?”

“Forty seconds.”

Claire laughed.

“Only forty?”

Vincent stepped closer.

“Maybe forty years.”

She smiled.

“That's a better offer.”

She took his hand.

And together, they stepped onto the dance floor.

The chandeliers glittered above them.

The orchestra played.

And the city continued moving beyond the windows.

Claire rested her head against Vincent's shoulder.

For a moment, she remembered Ethan.

The fear.

The manipulation.

The way she'd once believed love meant making herself smaller.

Then she looked up at Vincent.

The man who had once frightened an entire ballroom simply by entering it.

The man who had learned that real strength meant telling the truth.

Respecting boundaries.

And choosing love over power.

Vincent kissed her forehead.

“Happy?”

Claire smiled.

“Very.”

He held her gently.

And for the first time in her life, Claire understood what it meant to dance without fear.

Not because someone powerful was holding her.

But because she knew she could walk away whenever she wanted.

And she didn't want to.

She wanted to stay.

May you like

With him.

For every song that came next.
