Chapter 5 - THE PHOTOGRAPH CLAIRE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO SEE

Vincent explained only what he could confirm.
Several shipments intended for Harborlight's overseas medical programs had disappeared.
The foundation's records showed the supplies had been delivered.
But the receiving organizations reported otherwise.
Someone had altered shipping documents.
And Ethan Parker's consulting company appeared repeatedly in the transactions.
Claire stared.
“Ethan works in corporate logistics.”
Vincent nodded.
“I know.”
“He told me he was helping the foundation with international distribution.”
“He was.”
Claire swallowed.
“Then why would he steal medical supplies?”
Vincent looked toward the window.
“We don't know yet.”
She studied him.
“Who are you?”
He was quiet.
Then answered.
“I own several transportation companies.”
Claire raised an eyebrow.
“That's not all.”
“No.”
She waited.
Vincent looked at her.
“My family has a complicated history.”
Claire laughed softly.
“That sounds like a very expensive way of saying something terrible.”
For the first time, Vincent smiled fully.
“You're perceptive.”
She folded her arms.
“Occupational hazard.”
He looked at her.
“Claire, you should understand something.”
“What?”
“People are afraid of me.”
She glanced toward the elevator.
“I noticed.”
He nodded.
“And some of them have good reasons.”
The honesty surprised her.
Vincent continued.
“I won't ask you to trust me because I helped you on the dance floor.”
Claire looked at him.
“Then what are you asking?”
“Nothing.”
She stared.
May you like
He continued.
“Just be careful around Parker.”
