Chapter 8 - The Battle for Custody

The preliminary custody hearing took place two weeks later in Courtroom 302 of the County Family Court.
Claire appeared in an orange jail jumpsuit, her hands shackled at her waist. Without her designer clothes, makeup, and styled hair, she looked hollow, defeated, and frantic. Her court-appointed public defender sat beside her, shuffling through a thin defense brief.
Diane sat in the second row of the gallery, having secured release through a high-interest bail bondsman, glaring at me with bitter resentment.
Judge Katherine Moore took the bench and adjusted her spectacles.
"Counsel, we are here to review the emergency custody order regarding minors Lily Hayes and Noah Hayes," Judge Moore stated. "Mr. Pendelton, present your evidence."
Pendelton stood up with poise. On the courtroom projection screens, he displayed the verified pediatric medical reports from St. Michael's, the certified 911 dispatch log, and the high-definition video footage from our kitchen.
The courtroom fell into an absolute, suffocating silence as Claire's voice echoed through the speakers:
“If you spill anything, you clean it. Don’t embarrass me by calling your father… By the time Daniel figures anything out, the accounts will already be empty.”
Several court spectators gasped.
Claire buried her face in her shackled hands, sobbing openly.
Her public defender leaned over, whispered something to her, and stood up with a resigned sigh.
"Your Honor," the public defender stated. "In light of the overwhelming evidentiary record, the respondent Claire Hayes waives her right to contest the temporary custody petition and agrees to enter a consent decree granting sole legal and physical custody to the petitioner, Daniel Hayes."
Judge Moore looked down from the bench at Claire with piercing authority.
"Mrs. Hayes, your conduct constitutes an appalling betrayal of the sacred duty of parenthood," Judge Moore ruled, striking her gavel with resounding force. "Sole legal and physical custody is awarded permanently to Daniel Hayes. Claire Hayes is prohibited from contacting the minors directly or indirectly through any third party. The protective order remains in full effect for ten years."

As bailiffs escorted Claire back toward the holding cell, she looked at me with pleading eyes, mouthing the words: "Daniel, please..."
I didn't blink. I didn't look away. I simply turned and walked out the double doors into the sunlit corridor.
