Chapter 3 - The Financial Ambush

At 2:30 a.m., while Lily and Noah slept under observation in the pediatric recovery ward, I sat in the family waiting area with my government-issued encrypted laptop.
Claire's recorded words echoed in my mind: “By the time Daniel figures anything out, the accounts will already be empty.”
I logged into our joint banking portal. Our liquid assets totaled approximately $420,000—savings accumulated over ten years of government service, combined with the proceeds from the sale of my late father’s estate.
On the pending transaction log, a scheduled wire transfer was queued for 8:00 a.m. Monday morning: $395,000 destined for an offshore corporate shell entity named Aegis Holdings Ltd. registered in the Cayman Islands.
The authorized signatory on the transfer was Claire Hayes.
Beside the wire request was a pre-authorized withdrawal of our children’s college investment funds—$65,000 in Lily’s 529 plan and $25,000 in Noah’s trust.
Marcus Vale had not merely seduced my wife; he was using her access to drain our entire family net worth into his offshore laundering structure before fleeing the jurisdiction. Vale Capital had been under quiet federal scrutiny for six months for orchestrating Ponzi-style real estate syndications, but federal prosecutors had lacked the internal cryptographic keys to trace his shell accounts.
Claire had just handed me the missing link on our living room camera.
I picked up my secure phone and dialed Special Agent Victoria Sterling of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Financial Crimes Task Force.
"Victoria," I said when the line connected on the third ring. "It's Daniel Hayes."
"Daniel? It's three in the morning. What's wrong?"
"I have Marcus Vale on 4K digital video inside my private residence conspiring grand theft, and I have the routing and Swift numbers for his primary Cayman laundering conduit," I stated. "I'm uploading the raw packets to the federal repository right now. I need an emergency FinCEN freeze on Aegis Holdings before commercial wire windows open at dawn."

There was a three-second silence on the other end, followed by the sound of rapid typing.
"Send the files, Daniel," Agent Sterling replied, her tone turning razor-sharp. "We'll lock every account he touches before sunrise."
