Chapter 6 - The Raid on the Penthouse

While Claire and Diane were booked into the county detention center, federal agents executed simultaneous search warrants on Marcus Vale's high-rise penthouse and corporate headquarters downtown.

At 7:00 a.m., Agent Victoria Sterling met me outside the federal courthouse.

"We seized his primary servers, his private ledger, and three encrypted cold-storage crypto wallets," Victoria reported, handing me a secure tablet. "Your real-time notification allowed FinCEN to freeze the Aegis Holdings account at 6:02 a.m., exactly twelve minutes before his automated transfer executed. Every cent of your $420,000 remains secure in an escrow holding account."

"What about his other victims?" I asked.

Victoria gave a grim smile. "We found records of seventy-four elderly investors whose life savings were funneled into his personal accounts over the past three years. With the access credentials we pulled from his duffel bag at your house, the Department of Justice is filing an eighteen-count federal RICO indictment against Vale Capital."

"And Claire's involvement?"

"She was listed as a co-conspirator and executive director on two of the shell companies. She signed three fraudulent wire transfer authorizations using stolen corporate credentials. She isn't just looking at state child neglect charges, Daniel. She's facing federal wire fraud and money laundering."

I signed the formal evidence declaration, handed the tablet back to Agent Sterling, and checked my watch.

It was 8:30 a.m. It was time to go back to the hospital and bring my children home.
