Chapter 2 - The Evidence in Room Four

The pediatric emergency department at St. Michael's was quiet when I carried Lily and Noah through the automatic doors at 12:15 a.m.
Dr. Sarah Martinez, the attending pediatrician, examined Lily first. As she gently palpated Lily’s shoulders and lumbar spine, my daughter flinched, clutching my thumb with tiny, cold fingers.
"Severe lumbar strain and bilateral trapezoid bruising," Dr. Martinez dictated to the triage nurse. "Consistent with prolonged physical burden bearing disproportionate to developmental age."
"What about Noah?" I asked, keeping my voice level.
"Severe diaper dermatitis from sitting in soiled diapers for at least six to eight hours, mild dehydration, and elevated cortisol levels," Dr. Martinez replied, turning to look directly at me. Her expression was grave. "Mr. Hayes, by state law, I am a mandated reporter. An injury of this nature resulting from unsupervised confinement of minors requires an immediate notification to Child Protective Services and the municipal police."
"I am aware, Doctor," I replied calmly. "In fact, I insist on a full forensic pediatric examination report, signed chain-of-custody photographs of all injuries, and a tox screen on Noah's feeding formula."
The nurse paused, looking up in surprise at my precise terminology.
Within forty minutes, Officer Brandon Reed of the Oakridge Police Department arrived at the exam room. He held a small notepad, ready for the usual chaotic domestic dispute.
Instead, I handed him a printed manila folder containing high-resolution color captures of the house, a certified transcript of the 10:43 p.m. distress call, and an encrypted USB drive containing authenticated footage of Claire and Diane abandoning the minors at 4:12 p.m. and 6:03 p.m.
Officer Reed reviewed the documents, his eyebrows rising higher with every page.
"You're Daniel Hayes? The senior cyber-investigator on the state fraud task force?" Reed asked.
"I am," I said. "The female suspect is Claire Hayes. The accomplice is Diane Miller. The co-conspirator visible on video entering the premises and discussing grand larceny is Marcus Vale. I am officially requesting an emergency ex parte temporary restraining order, full protective custody of both minors, and the filing of Class 3 felony child neglect charges."

Officer Reed closed his notebook and looked at Lily, who was currently asleep on the hospital bed, holding a small plush bear the nurse had given her.
"Consider the report filed, Mr. Hayes," Reed said firmly. "I'm calling the duty magistrate right now."
