Chapter 5 - The Web of Collusion

At 5:15 a.m., the living room windows exploded in blinding flashes of red and blue emergency strobes.
The sharp, heavy thud of a tactical breach hammer slammed against the front door.
"Oakridge Police! Search warrant and felony arrest warrants! Open the door immediately!"
Inside the house, chaos erupted on the live monitor. Claire dropped her wine glass, sending shards and alcohol spraying across the floor. Diane shrieked in terror, clutching her chest, while Marcus bolted toward the back patio door.
He didn't make it two steps into the backyard before three tactical officers tackled him to the damp grass, securing his wrists in heavy steel cuffs.
The front door swung open, and Officer Reed stepped inside with his service weapon drawn, followed by four uniformed officers and County Investigator Miller.
"Claire Hayes and Diane Miller," Officer Reed announced, stepping into the kitchen. "You are under arrest for felony child neglect, reckless endangerment of minors, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny."
"What?!" Claire screamed, backing against the counter with her hands raised. "This is a mistake! My husband is out of town! Where are my kids? Did Daniel call you? He's crazy!"
"Your children were admitted to the emergency room five hours ago with physical trauma and severe neglect," Investigator Miller said coldly, stepping forward to ratchet zip-ties around Claire's wrists. "And your husband didn't just call us, Mrs. Hayes. He provided sixteen gigabytes of high-definition video evidence documenting your entire evening."
Claire froze. Her face turned the color of chalk.
"The... the cameras were broken," she stammered, her voice shaking violently. "He turned them off three months ago!"
"Mr. Hayes is the Chief Forensic Evidence Specialist for the State Attorney General," Miller replied with zero sympathy. "Did you really think you could outsmart the man who trains our cyber division?"

Diane began wailing as an officer cuffed her. "I'm a grandmother! I didn't do anything! It was Claire's idea!"
"Save it for the magistrate, Mrs. Miller," Officer Reed said, leading both women out into the cold morning rain while neighbors peered through their curtains in stunned disbelief.
