Chapter 9 - The Gavel of Absolute Retribution

Six months after that fateful Sunday afternoon, the criminal sentencing of Julian Vance took place at the Washington State Superior Court in Tacoma.
The courtroom was packed to capacity with reporters, forensic investigators, and surviving family members of Julian’s financial schemes.
Judge Robert Martinez looked down from the bench with severe, uncompromising moral authority.
“Julian Vance, you have demonstrated a chilling, calculated pattern of premeditated murder, financial devastation, and the horrific physical and emotional abuse of an innocent ten-year-old child,” Judge Martinez declared.
He struck the heavy oak gavel with a thunderous crack that echoed through the silent courtroom.
“On Count One: First-Degree Aggravated Murder—Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole. On Count Two: Premeditated Murder by Poison—Life Imprisonment without parole. On Counts Three and Four: Forty years consecutive for Aggravated Kidnapping and Felony Domestic Battery.”
Judge Martinez leaned forward.
“You will serve these sentences at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla. You will never see the outside of a maximum-security prison wall for the remainder of your natural life.”
Julian stood paralyzed, tears streaming down his gaunt face as state marshals clicked the heavy transport chains around his waist and ankles.

As he was led through the reinforced steel side door, he turned his head and caught my gaze.
There was no hatred in my eyes. There was no petty desire for revenge. There was only the quiet, unbreakable peace of a father who had protected his daughter, exposed the darkness, and brought the monster into the light.
