Chapter 4 - The Headlights on the Wet Driveway

At that exact moment, the crunch of heavy tires rolling over wet gravel echoed from the front driveway.

The deep, guttural hum of Julian’s V8 engine vibrated through the foundation of the house. He was back.

“He’s here,” Elena whispered, her skin turning the color of ash. “He told me he was going to rent a heavy-duty submersible trash pump to drain the pool and move the bags into the national forest tonight.”

“Stay down here behind the concrete wall,” I commanded, keeping my voice low and steady. “Do not make a sound.”

I climbed quietly up the wooden cellar steps, keeping low beneath the shadow of the privacy fence.

Around the corner of the detached garage, Julian stepped out of his black SUV. He had discarded his usual polished business attire, wearing dark work overalls, heavy leather gloves, and steel-toed boots. In the open bed of his vehicle sat an industrial water pump and six fifty-pound bags of quicklime.

Julian walked toward the rear gate, whistling a relaxed tune under his breath as he pulled his key ring from his pocket.

The moment he pushed the gate open and stepped onto the patio, his whistling stopped.

He saw the shattered padlock on the dog crate. He saw the blue tarp tossed aside. He saw the wet aluminum pole on the patio and the ripped contractor bag sitting on the shallow steps of the pool.

Julian’s face twisted from smug sociopathic composure into a snarling mask of pure, murderous rage.

He reached behind his back, sliding a black semi-automatic pistol from a concealed holster beneath his overalls.

“Elena!” Julian roared, his voice bouncing off the brick walls. “David! I know you’re here, you pathetic coward! Step out right now, or I swear I’ll walk next door and burn Mrs. Harris’s house to the ground with your daughter inside!”

He took two aggressive strides toward the patio.

I didn't wait for him to aim.

As Julian passed the corner of the brick chimney, I lunged from the blind spot with all the momentum in my body, driving my shoulder hard into his midsection.
