Chapter 10 - A Sunlit Shore for Maya

One year later, the warm summer breeze swept across the emerald bluffs of Port Townsend, carrying the crisp scent of cedar, salty sea air, and the sweet melody of coastal birds.
Standing on the sun-drenched wooden porch of our newly restored coastal craftsman home were Maya and myself.
The wide backyard was surrounded by wild blackberry bushes and tall Douglas firs, completely open to the sparkling blue waters of the Puget Sound—no metal cages, no privacy panels, and no dark secrets.
Down on the soft pebble beach, eleven-year-old Maya was laughing joyously, throwing a tennis ball across the shore for our golden retriever puppy, Barnaby. Her cheeks were rosy with health, her laughter ringing out clear, vibrant, and completely unburdened against the gentle ocean waves.
With the recovered victim restitution funds and the success of my independent custom woodworking workshop, Hall & Daughter Timbercraft, we had built a life of complete independence, security, and peace.
Elena, who had rebuilt her life and moved into a quiet community nearby, visited every Sunday for family dinners, maintaining a healthy, supportive, and warm presence in Maya’s life.
“Daddy! Look what Barnaby found!” Maya called out, running up the wooden stairs of the beach deck holding a smooth, heart-shaped piece of green sea glass.
I knelt down on the timber deck, opening my arms wide. Maya ran straight into my hug, wrapping her arms around my neck as Barnaby happily tumbled around our feet.
“It’s sea glass, Daddy,” Maya beamed, holding the translucent green stone up against the golden afternoon sunlight. “The waves tumbled it in the rough water until all the sharp edges disappeared and made it smooth.”
I kissed the top of her head, my heart overflowing with fierce, boundless love.

“Just like us, sweetheart,” I smiled, holding her tight. “We weathered the storm, and now everything is beautiful.”
The cold terror of that overgrown yard, the murky depths of the pool, and the shadows of the past were gone forever. Standing together on the sunlit shore, surrounded by truth, safety, and unbreakable love, we knew that our light would shine brightly for all the years to come.
