Chapter 2 - The Shadows in the Deep End

Maya’s words sent a shockwave of cold terror straight through my chest.

“Maya, look at me,” I said softly, holding her small face in my hands. “Where is your mother? Where is Elena?”

Maya pointed a trembling finger toward the heavy steel Bilco storm cellar doors built into the rear concrete foundation of the house. “He locked her down there on Friday night after she found the papers in his safe. Then he put me in the cage so I couldn't run to Mrs. Harris’s house. He said he had to clean the pool before the auditors came on Monday.”

My instincts took over. Julian wasn't just an abusive stepfather running a toxic household; he was actively covering up a major crime.

I lifted Maya over the cedar fence into the waiting, protective arms of Mrs. Harris. “Take her inside, bolt your doors, and dial 911 immediately,” I told the elderly neighbor. “Tell the dispatcher we have an active hostage situation, a child abuse rescue, and evidence of a homicide in the pool.”

“Be careful, David,” Mrs. Harris pleaded, wrapping Maya in a thick wool quilt.

Once Maya was safely over the perimeter, I turned back toward the green, opaque water. I retrieved an eight-foot aluminum pool skimmer pole resting near the tool shed and walked along the tiled coping to the deep end.

I lowered the metal hook down into six feet of dark water, maneuvering the tip until it caught the nylon tow strap of the nearest contractor bag.

I hauled it upward with all my strength. The bag was weighed down with two twenty-pound barbell plates fastened by heavy zip-ties. As the top broke the surface, the thick polyethylene plastic tore slightly against the concrete lip.

Inside, there was no household trash.

Through the tear, I saw waterproof Pelican tactical cases, vacuum-sealed stacks of foreign currency, and a thick, zip-locked envelope containing glass ampoules of pharmaceutical-grade fentanyl and concentrated neuromuscular blockers.

Taped to the front of the Pelican case was an encrypted hard drive labeled with high-visibility marker: VANCE OFFSHORE — TAX ARBITRAGE & ESTATE CLEARANCE.

Julian was hiding the digital and chemical evidence of a massive financial fraud.

And just three feet to the left, resting motionless at the bottom of the deep end, lay the second black bag—long, heavy, and unmistakably shaped like the contours of a human body.
