Chapter 9 - The Federal Gavel of Justice

Six months later, Courtroom 4B of the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas was packed to maximum capacity for the sentencing of Rebecca Vance and Gregory Cole.

Sitting in the front row of the gallery were Leo and me. Leo was dressed in a handsome little navy blazer and dark trousers, standing tall and proud on his two healed legs, holding my hand with a radiant smile. In my arms, three-and-a-half-year-old Maya wore a bright yellow floral dress, giggling softly as she played with a plush lion cub.

Rebecca and Gregory sat at the defense table in bright orange federal prison jumpsuits, their wrists and ankles bound in heavy iron chains. Their high-society arrogance had been completely crushed by six months in solitary detention.

Chief Judge Eleanor Sterling looked down from the bench with severe, unyielding moral authority.

“Rebecca Vance, Gregory Cole,” Judge Sterling declared, her voice ringing through the silent hall. “You engaged in a calculated, depraved, and monstrous campaign of premeditated poisoning, grand corporate forgery, and the barbaric torture and attempted murder of two innocent children who trusted you as their mother.”

Judge Sterling brought her heavy wooden gavel down with a thunderous crack.

“On all counts of Capital Murder, Conspiracy, and Aggravated Child Torture, Rebecca Vance is hereby sentenced to Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be served at the Federal Medical Center, Carswell.”

Rebecca collapsed forward onto the table, letting out a broken, hysterical wail as federal marshals secured her transport chains.

“Gregory Cole is sentenced to Life Imprisonment without parole at ADX Florence Federal Supermax.”

As the marshals hauled the two weeping convicts through the heavy iron holding doors forever, Leo looked up at me with clear, untroubled eyes.

“Uncle Thomas?”

“Yes, little lion?”

May you like

“Can we go home and feed the horses now?”

I smiled from the depths of my soul, scooping Leo and Maya into my arms. “Yes, Leo. Let’s go home.”
