Chapter 10 - Sunlight Over the Austin Hills

One year after that dark night at the gate, the warm summer sun cast long, shimmering rays of gold across the expansive green lawns and rolling pastures of the Moretti Estate in the Austin hills.

The cool breeze off Lake Travis carried the sweet fragrance of blooming jasmine, grilled barbecue, and the pure, unrestrained laughter of children.

Six-year-old Leo, completely healed, strong, and bursting with athletic energy, was sprinting across the soft grass in his red sneakers, kicking a soccer ball ahead of him, with four-year-old Maya chasing behind him, giggling in the warm Texas sunshine.

Under the shaded cedar pergola overlooking the water, a grand banquet table was decorated with fresh white lilies, artisan fruit tarts, and a magnificent two-tier chocolate cake celebrating Leo’s seventh birthday and his first day of second grade.

Over fifty true friends, doctors from Dell Children’s, Detective Marcus Stone, and loyal colleagues had gathered on the stone terrace to celebrate.

Under my sole direction, I had completely restructured the family holdings, permanently stepping away from the underworld to establish the Ethan Moretti Foundation for Child Safety & Pediatric Trauma Recovery, endowing $20 million to build emergency shelters and provide free medical surgeries for abused children across Texas.

I stood by the timber balustrade wearing a relaxed linen shirt, holding a glass of iced peach tea, watching the children play.

Detective Marcus Stone walked over, smiling warmly as he clinked his glass against mine. “Look at him run, Thomas. You kept your promise to Ethan.”

“Ethan gave me the two greatest gifts in this world, Marcus,” I replied softly, my heart overflowing with profound, unbreakable peace.

Leo came sprinting up the terrace steps on his fast, strong legs, with Maya running right behind him, throwing their arms around my waist with a burst of pure, ringing joy.

“Uncle Thomas! Look!” Leo beamed, holding up a handmade drawing of our family standing together under a giant golden sun. “I drew our house! And there are no locks on any doors!”

I knelt down on the flagstones, scooping both Leo and Maya into a warm, fierce, unbreakable embrace beneath the endless blue sky.

“There will never be locks on our doors again, my brave lions,” I whispered, kissing both of their soft foreheads.

The dark basements, the cruel lies, and the cold shadows of betrayal were gone forever. Standing tall in the warm golden sunshine, surrounded by honor, prosperity, and unconditional love, we were finally whole—a family that would stand strong, bright, and protected for all the years to come.
