Chapter 6 - THE HOSPITAL CONNECTION

Dominic placed a second folder on the table.
Inside were acquisition proposals involving three struggling medical facilities.
Harborlight had planned to purchase them through a network of investment entities.
The proposals emphasized improved staffing, expanded cardiac services, and community care.
But attached financial models told a different story.
Staffing reductions.
Service consolidation.
Aggressive billing projections.
Mara studied the documents.
“These numbers don't match the patient-care promises.”
Dominic nodded.
“I know.”
“When did you know?”
“Three days ago.”
Mara looked up.
“And you didn't tell me.”
“I was trying to stop the deal.”
“Without telling the person whose name was on it.”
Dominic lowered his eyes.
Mara turned another page.
One facility was connected to Northwestern through a proposed clinical partnership.
Her hospital.
Her workplace.
The boundary they had maintained for nine years had not merely been crossed.
It had been dismantled behind her back.
Mara looked at Dominic.
“Did you know my hospital was involved?”
“No. Not until I reviewed the final documents.”
Evelyn Price interrupted.
“Mr. Caruso, we need complete records of every entity involved. We also need confirmation that no patient data or protected information was accessed through Mrs. Caruso's credentials.”
Dominic nodded.
“You'll have it.”
Mara looked at him.
“And if the records implicate you?”
He met her eyes.
“Then they implicate me.”

She saw a man beginning to understand that saving it might require surrendering control.
