Chapter 12 - THE HOUSE WITH TWO KEYS

Six months after Mara left, Dominic asked her to visit their home.

She agreed.

But she made one condition.

No surprises.

When she arrived, the mansion looked the same.

The marble floors.

The high ceilings.

The enormous windows overlooking the gardens.

But the library had changed.

The desk where she'd discovered the forged agreement was gone.

In its place stood a smaller table.

Two chairs.

No throne-like leather seat.

No wall of security monitors.

Dominic watched her expression.

“I thought we could talk here.”

Mara nodded.

He placed a folder on the table.

She stiffened.

Dominic noticed.

“It's not a contract.”

He opened it.

Inside were documents confirming changes to their shared property arrangements and independent financial protections.

Mara had already reviewed the proposals through her own attorney.

Dominic slid a small key across the table.

“Your apartment.”

Mara looked at him.

She had rented a place near the hospital.

He had offered to pay for it.

She had refused.

“Why are you giving me this?”

“You left your spare key at the house when you moved.”

She laughed softly.

He continued.

“I want you to know you can come here without losing the right to leave.”

Mara stared at him.

For years, Dominic had believed marriage meant permanence secured through control.

Now he was learning that permanence meant nothing without choice.

Mara picked up the key.

Then placed another beside it.

The spare key to the mansion.

Dominic looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

She smiled faintly.

“It means I'm willing to try.”

His eyes filled.

“But slowly,” she added.

He nodded.

“As slowly as you need.”

For the first time in months, Mara embraced him.

May you like

Not because everything was fixed.

Because they had finally stopped pretending it was.
