Chapter 10 - THE HUSBAND WHO CHOSE THE TRUTH

Dominic made a decision that shocked his associates.
He voluntarily provided investigators with records concerning Harborlight and the related investment entities.
He also disclosed the recording Julian had used to threaten him.
His attorney warned him that the material could expose him to serious legal consequences.
Dominic understood.
He had participated in discussions that treated Mara's identity as a bargaining tool.
He could not pretend otherwise.
For years, he had solved problems through influence.
Now he had to learn a different form of accountability.
Mara watched from a distance.
She didn't reward him for doing what he should have done earlier.
But she noticed.
One evening, Dominic asked to see her.
They met in a quiet park near the lake.
The wind was cold.
The trees were bare.
“I don't expect you to come home,” he said.
Mara nodded.
“Good.”
He smiled sadly.
“I've started working with a counselor.”
She looked at him.
“For what?”
“For the way I think about control.”
Mara studied him.
He continued.
“I thought protecting you meant keeping you away from difficult things.”
“And instead?”
“I made decisions that put you in danger.”
Mara looked toward the water.
Dominic took a breath.
“I don't want forgiveness because I love you.”
She turned.
“What do you want?”
He met her eyes.
“A chance to become someone who deserves it.”
Mara felt tears rise.
But she didn't move closer.
“Then do the work.”
Dominic nodded.
“I will.”
They stood together for a while.
Not reconciled.

Not separated forever.
Just two people facing the consequences of a marriage built partly on silence.
