Chapter 2 - THE DOCUMENT WITH HER SIGNATURE

Dominic was waiting in the library when Mara arrived.

He wore the charcoal suit she had bought him for their eighth anniversary. His tie was loosened, his sleeves rolled back, and an untouched glass of bourbon stood on the desk.

Serena sat in the leather chair opposite him.

Mara stopped in the doorway.

“Get out.”

Serena stood.

“Mara, please.”

“I wasn't speaking to my husband.”

Dominic stepped forward.

“Let her explain.”

Mara looked at him.

“You're asking me to listen to the woman who answered your private phone at a meeting you hid from me?”

Serena's face tightened.

“It wasn't what you think.”

“Then what was it?”

Neither answered.

Mara noticed a cream-colored folder on Dominic's desk.

Her name was printed across the front.

MARA ELLISON CARUSO — CONSENT AND REPRESENTATION

She walked toward it.

Dominic moved instinctively.

“Don't.”

Mara stopped.

The word hung between them.

“Don't what?”

He looked at the folder.

“Let me explain first.”

She picked it up.

Inside was a document bearing her full legal name, nursing credentials, hospital affiliation, and a signature that looked almost exactly like hers.

Almost.

Mara examined the final stroke.

Her own signature always ended with a slight downward hook. She had developed the habit during nursing school, signing medication administration records so often that the motion had become automatic.

This signature ended upward.

She turned the page.

The document stated that Mara had agreed to serve as an independent clinical liaison for a private healthcare investment initiative called the Harborlight Continuity Project.

She had supposedly consented to the use of her professional biography and approved preliminary patient-care protocols.

There was also a nondisclosure clause.

And a payment authorization.

Two million dollars.

Mara read the figure twice.

Then looked at Dominic.

“What is this?”

He didn't answer quickly enough.

She lifted the document.

“Who signed my name?”

Serena stepped closer.

“Mara, the intention was to protect you.”

Mara turned toward her.

“You forged my signature to protect me?”

“It wasn't supposed to become official.”

“But it did.”

Serena swallowed.

Dominic spoke.

“The agreement isn't final.”

Mara looked back at him.

“That's not what I asked.”

He lowered his voice.

“We were negotiating with a group that controls several medical properties. Your involvement was supposed to be temporary.”

“My involvement?”

“On paper.”

Mara stared at him.

“You put my nursing license into a business deal?”

Dominic's expression hardened with shame.

“I thought I could stop it before anyone actually used your name.”

Mara slowly closed the folder.

Then she said the words he would remember for the rest of his life.

“My name was never yours to spend.”

Dominic flinched.

Serena began crying.

Mara didn't look at her.

“I'm leaving.”

Dominic reached for her.

“Mara, wait.”

She stepped away.

“No. You don't get to touch me while you're still deciding how much truth I deserve.”

She walked upstairs, packed a small suitcase, and removed her wedding ring.

May you like

Not because she had decided the marriage was over.

Because she could not bear the weight of a promise her husband had broken without even asking her.
