Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO LOST TWO FRIENDS

Serena Vale was interviewed during the investigation.

She admitted accepting money connected to the Harborlight proposal.

She also acknowledged helping coordinate meetings where Mara's professional identity was discussed without her knowledge.

Her cooperation did not erase her conduct.

She faced legal and financial consequences.

Mara refused to speak with her for months.

Then one afternoon, Serena sent a handwritten letter.

Mara almost threw it away.

Instead, she read it.

Serena admitted she had been jealous.

Not of Mara's marriage.

Of her independence.

Mara had built a career that belonged entirely to her.

Serena had spent years depending on her brother's money and influence.

When Julian offered her a role in the deal, she had accepted because she wanted to feel important.

The explanation did not excuse anything.

But it was the first time Serena had stopped pretending her betrayal was an act of love.

Mara wrote back.

One page.

No anger.

No insults.

She told Serena that forgiveness might come someday.

But trust would not return simply because Serena was sorry.

Then she placed the letter in an envelope.

And let the friendship end.

That evening, Mara met Dominic for dinner.

He noticed she was quiet.

“Bad day?”

She nodded.

“I lost someone I thought would always be in my life.”

Dominic didn't ask her to explain.

He simply listened.

After a while, Mara said:

“Sometimes I think betrayal hurts because it changes the past.”

Dominic looked at her.

“How?”

“You start questioning every memory.”

He nodded slowly.

Mara continued.

“Was she ever really my friend? Did you ever really respect my boundaries?”

Dominic lowered his eyes.

“I did love you.”

Mara looked at him.

“I know.”

He looked up.

“But love wasn't enough.”

She nodded.

“No.”

May you like

Then she added:

“Maybe now we can learn what else it takes.”
