Chapter 9 - The Gavel of the Broken Vow

================================================================================
Three months later, Courtroom 5B of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York convened for the formal sentencing of Arthur, Brian, and Scott Vance, alongside the emergency custody trial of Jake Hayes.
The gallery was filled with military veterans, child advocacy representatives, and national media who had followed the shocking downfall of the prominent real estate family.
Chief Federal Judge Harrison Miller presided over the bench with stern, impenetrable moral authority.
First came the criminal sentencing.
Judge Miller reviewed the forensic biomechanical models of Jake's injuries, the audio recordings, and the financial conspiracy.
"The defendants engaged in a calculated, predatory, and depraved act of physical violence against an innocent eight-year-old child to satisfy their personal financial greed," Judge Miller declared.
The judge brought down his heavy wooden gavel with a thunderous crack.
"Arthur Vance is sentenced to Forty Years in maximum-security federal custody without eligibility for parole. Brian Vance and Scott Vance are sentenced to Twenty-Five Years each in federal penitentiary."
As federal marshals escorted the three chained men through the reinforced side doors, Arthur turned to look at the gallery one last time. His face was gaunt, his spirit completely crushed.
I sat in the front row, holding Jake’s hand. We did not look at him with hatred. We looked at him with the quiet, untouchable peace of those who had brought the truth into the light.
Then Judge Miller addressed the family custody petition.
Christine sat at the opposing table with her court-appointed attorney, having voluntarily signed a full confession of child neglect and non-intervention.
Judge Miller adjusted his glasses. "In the matter of minor child Jake Hayes: The parental rights of Christine Vance are hereby terminated with prejudice. Full, exclusive, and permanent legal and physical custody is awarded unconditionally to Lieutenant Commander Logan Hayes. Furthermore, a permanent lifetime protective order is enacted across all jurisdictions."
Christine buried her face in her hands, weeping in silence as the gavel struck for the final time.
Jake looked up at me, his hazel eyes clear, bright, and completely healed.
"Dad?" he whispered.
"Yes, buddy?"
"Are we going home now?"
I lifted my son into my arms, hugging him tight against my chest.
May you like
"Yes, Jake," I smiled, feeling the warmth of his small arms around my neck. "We're going home."
