Chapter 7 - The Breach at Midnight

BOOM.
The heavy wrought-iron gates at the entrance of the estate were breached with the concussive roar of an armored tactical ram.
Floodlights with the brilliance of a thousand suns exploded through every window of the Vance mansion, blinding the living room in pure, white luminescence. The rhythmic, deafening thrum of a Blackhawk tactical helicopter rattled the crystal chandeliers overhead.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! NOBODY MOVE!"
The front double doors were kicked inward off their hinges. Twelve heavily armed tactical operators from the FBI Hostage Rescue Team and the Joint Terrorism Task Force flooded the ground floor in synchronized combat formation, laser sights painting Arthur, Scott, and Brian in vibrant crimson dots.
Arthur stumbled backward, shielding his eyes, shrieking in blind panic: "What is this?! Call Chief O'Malley! I demand to speak to my lawyer!"
Senior Special Agent Marcus 'Ghost' Lawson stepped through the shattered doorway, dressed in a crisp black command uniform, accompanied by Chief Federal Prosecutor Evelyn Wright.
Marcus walked straight past Arthur and stood before me, snapping a crisp, formal military salute.
"Commander Hayes," Marcus announced for the room's open audio record. "The perimeter is secure. Airspace is locked. The emergency federal warrant for Aggravated Attempted Murder of a Minor, Corporate Racketeering, and Extortion is active."
Arthur’s jaw dropped so low it looked dislocated. He stared at me, then at the federal director, his voice trembling in utter disbelief.
"Commander...?" Arthur choked out. "He's... he's an IT network consultant!"
Prosecutor Evelyn Wright stepped forward, pulling a thick, gold-sealed federal portfolio from her briefcase.
"Arthur Vance," Prosecutor Wright declared with chilling authority. "Logan Hayes is a retired Lieutenant Commander of Naval Special Warfare Development Group, recipient of the Navy Cross, and senior strategic advisor to the Department of Defense. His domestic identity was classified under federal witness and family protection statutes."
Prosecutor Wright looked at the bruised, trembling men on the floor.
"You didn't attack the child of a suburban technician, Mr. Vance," Wright said with razor precision. "You attempted to murder the son of a decorated combat commander on behalf of an illegal foreign gambling syndicate."
Scott tried to bolt toward the rear sunroom, but two tactical operators tackled him face-first into the hardwood floor, securing his wrists in heavy steel handcuffs.

Arthur collapsed onto his knees on the Persian rug, clutching his chest as the reality of his total, irreversible destruction crashed down upon him.
