Chapter 3 - The House on Stonecrest Ridge

================================================================================

While two elite private operators in plainclothes took up silent posts outside Jake’s hospital room, I drove thirty miles north into the wealthy hills of Stonecrest Ridge.

The Vance estate was an imposing, gated compound surrounded by eight-foot wrought-iron fencing and ancient oak trees. Four luxury vehicles were parked in the circular driveway: Arthur’s black Mercedes Maybach, Brian’s Porsche Cayenne, Scott’s lifted custom truck, and Christine’s white BMW SUV.

Through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the formal dining room, chandelier light spilled across the manicured lawn.

Inside, Arthur Vance was pouring single-malt Scotch into crystal tumblers.

At sixty-four, Arthur was a man who ruled his family and his construction empire with authoritarian brutality. He had spent thirty years bribing municipal zoning boards, crushing independent subcontractors, and demanding absolute obedience from his children. Brian and Scott, both in their mid-thirties, were physical carbon copies of their father—heavy-set, arrogant, and accustomed to using intimidation to solve problems.

Christine sat at the dining table, her head in her hands, her shoulders trembling.

"Stop crying, Christine!" Arthur snapped, slamming his tumbler onto the mahogany surface. "The boy slipped on the driveway! That’s the official story! He was being defiant, he threw a tantrum, and he tripped near the garage!"

"He didn't trip, Dad!" Christine sobbed, looking up with red-rimmed eyes. "Brian tackled him! Scott held his legs while you—"

"I disciplined my grandson!" Arthur roared, stepping toward her, his face turning an ugly shade of crimson. "That boy has Logan’s blood in him! He looked me in the eye and said he wouldn't sign the trust papers! An eight-year-old child telling me no in my own house!"

Brian scoffed, taking a long swig of Scotch. "Relax, Christine. Logan is a quiet, spineless IT consultant. What’s he going to do? Yell at us? He’ll take the boy home, pay the doctor bill, and accept whatever settlement Dad offers."

"You don't understand Logan..." Christine whispered, a cold chill passing through her voice. "In six years of marriage, I've never seen him raise his voice. Not once. But whenever he looked at the old trunk in our basement, there was something in his eyes that terrified me."

Scott laughed loudly. "He's an IT nerd, Christine! If he shows up here, Brian and I will throw him off the property just like we did to the union organizers last month."

Outside in the dark tree line, seventy yards away, I sat inside my truck wearing tactical night-vision optics, listening to every single word through a laser audio microphone aimed directly at their dining room window.

Beside me on the dashboard, a encrypted tablet lit up with incoming intelligence files sent from Marcus.

"Logan," Marcus’s voice crackled through my earpiece. "We just decrypted Arthur Vance’s personal financial ledger. You need to see why they attacked your son."
