Chapter 9 - THE MAN WHO WOULDN'T ACCEPT CHARITY

My father offered Cal a job.
Not a favor.
A real position.
Safety coordinator.
Competitive salary.
Benefits.
Authority to stop unsafe work.
Cal refused at first.
He said he didn't want anyone thinking he'd manipulated the situation for employment.
My father looked at him.
“Son, you did what my own management failed to do.”
Cal said nothing.
“You protected people.”
He swallowed.
My father continued.
“That's exactly the kind of person I need.”
Cal looked at the contract.
Then asked:
“Would I have the authority to stop a project?”
My father nodded.
“Yes.”
“Even if it costs money?”
“Yes.”
Cal studied him.
“Even if the person responsible is your son?”
My father looked toward Grant's empty office.
Then answered:
“Especially then.”
May you like
Cal accepted.
And for the first time in months, he went home with a future he could believe in.
