Chapter 5 - THE SECRET INSIDE MERCER COMMERCIAL GLASS

My father was seventy-one.

He had built Mercer Commercial Glass with borrowed tools, two trucks, and a stubborn refusal to quit.

When I arrived at his office, he was reviewing invoices.

He looked up.

“Hannah.”

I closed the door.

“We need to talk.”

His smile faded.

“What happened?”

I placed Cal's documents on the desk.

He read them slowly.

Then read them again.

His expression changed.

“Where did you get these?”

“From a subcontractor.”

He looked at the photographs.

Then at the work order.

“Grant signed this?”

“Yes.”

My father stared.

“He shouldn't have.”

I felt cold.

“Why?”

“Because the engineering review wasn't complete.”

I swallowed.

“Dad, is the diner safe?”

He looked at me.

“I don't know.”

That frightened me more than anything.

My father rarely admitted uncertainty.

He picked up the phone.

“Get me our independent structural engineer.”

Then he looked at me.

“And Hannah?”

“Yes?”

“Don't tell Grant yet.”

I stared.

“Why?”

May you like

His expression hardened.

“Because I want to know what else he's signed.”
