Chapter 13 - THE FATHER WHO FINALLY SHOWED UP

Daniel called one Sunday morning.

He wanted to see Lucy.

I agreed.

But this time, I didn't make promises on his behalf.

I told Lucy her father had asked to visit.

Then I let him take responsibility for showing up.

He arrived on time.

Lucy looked surprised.

He brought her a book.

Not an expensive gift.

Just a book she'd mentioned wanting.

They spent the afternoon together.

Afterward, Daniel asked to speak with me.

He looked uncomfortable.

“I've been a terrible father.”

I didn't argue.

He swallowed.

“I know.”

I looked at him.

“Lucy doesn't need grand gestures.”

He nodded.

“She needs you to show up.”

He looked down.

“I know.”

I took a breath.

“Then do it.”

Over the following months, Daniel began attending school events.

Calling regularly.

Keeping his promises.

Not perfectly.

But consistently.

Lucy slowly began trusting him again.

Cal never tried to replace Daniel.

He simply remained present.

And I realized something important.

A child didn't have to choose between people who loved her.

She needed adults who were willing to act like adults.
