Chapter 7 - THE BROTHER WHO BETRAYED THE FAMILY NAME

Grant arrived at my father's office the next morning.
He was furious.
“You brought in an outside engineer?”
My father sat behind his desk.
“Yes.”
“Without telling me?”
“Yes.”
Grant looked at me.
“This is your fault.”
I folded my arms.
“Cal reported a problem.”
“He's a liar.”
My father raised one hand.
“Enough.”
Grant turned.
“Dad—”
“Sit down.”
Grant sat.
My father opened a folder.
Inside were several work orders.
Not just Miller's Corner.
Other projects.
Other signatures.
Other unresolved issues.
My stomach tightened.
My father looked at Grant.
“Explain these.”
Grant stared.
His face drained of color.
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
Then he whispered:
“I was trying to keep the company afloat.”
My father closed his eyes.
“What did you do?”
Grant swallowed.
“We were behind.”
“On what?”
“Payments. Contracts. Everything.”
I stared.
“How?”
Grant looked at me.
“Expansion.”
My father frowned.
“What expansion?”
Grant hesitated.
Then admitted he had committed the company to several projects without proper financing.
He had borrowed against future revenue.
Delayed payments.
And pressured subcontractors to finish work before inspections were complete.
My father looked devastated.
“You used my name.”
Grant's eyes filled.
“I was trying to prove I could run the company.”
May you like
My father stared at him.
“You don't prove yourself by putting people in danger.”
