Chapter 14 - THE DINER MANAGER'S APOLOGY

Miller's Corner reopened nearly a year after the original incident.
The building had been repaired.
The safety issues corrected.
The kitchen renovated.
And the staff rehired.
Dennis Miller invited Cal to the reopening.
Cal hesitated.
Then agreed.
I went with him.
Lucy and Noah came too.
The diner looked brighter.
Cleaner.
Safer.
Dennis approached us near the entrance.
He looked nervous.
“Cal.”
Cal nodded.
“Dennis.”
The manager swallowed.
“I owe you an apology.”
Cal said nothing.
Dennis continued.
“I judged you because of your clothes.”
He looked at Noah.
“And I embarrassed you in front of your son.”
Noah stared at him.
Dennis swallowed.
“I was wrong.”
Cal studied him.
Then nodded.
“Thank you.”
Dennis looked relieved.
But Cal continued.
“Don't do it to someone else.”
Dennis nodded.
“I won't.”
Lucy folded her arms.
“Promise?”
Dennis smiled faintly.
“Promise.”
Noah grinned.
“She's serious.”
May you like
Cal laughed.
“We know.”
