Chapter 6 - THE DINER THAT ALMOST COLLAPSED

The independent engineer inspected Miller's Corner the following morning.
By noon, the rear expansion area was closed.
By evening, the entire diner was temporarily shut down pending further evaluation.
Dennis Miller was furious.
He called my father.
Threatened lawsuits.
Accused Cal of sabotage.
But the engineer's findings were clear.
The temporary support arrangement did not match the approved plan.
The rear corridor required corrective work before it could be safely reopened.
Nobody had been injured.
That was the important part.
But Dennis didn't see it that way.
He saw lost revenue.
Bad publicity.
And a ruined holiday season.
He called me.
“Hannah, you've destroyed my business.”
I stared at the phone.
“No, Dennis.”
He shouted.
“You don't understand!”
I took a breath.
“I understand that someone warned you about a safety problem.”
Silence.
“And you humiliated him in front of his son.”
Dennis said nothing.
I continued.
“You should be thanking Cal Bennett.”
He hung up.
That evening, Lucy asked why the diner was closed.
I explained as simply as I could.
“Some parts of the building need to be repaired.”
She frowned.
“Because Cal told the truth?”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“Then he's a hero.”
May you like
I looked at her.
And for once, I didn't correct her.
