Chapter 7 - The Forensic Audit of Preston Vance

At 8:00 AM on Monday morning, the 32nd-floor executive boardroom of Vance Enterprises in downtown Chicago was an arena of cold reckoning.

The fourteen senior directors, institutional investors, and outside legal counsel sat in tense silence around the forty-foot glass table.

I walked in wearing a tailored emerald-green suit, carrying a leather portfolio, flanked by Julian Hayes—our chief forensic auditor—and Senior Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Vance.

Arthur and Victoria sat at the far end of the table, looking hollow and defeated.

Julian Hayes connected his encrypted drive to the central projection system. High-resolution forensic spreadsheets filled the screens.

“Over the past twenty-four months,” Julian Hayes announced, clicking through the certified bank records, “Preston Vance executed seventy-two unauthorized wire transfers totaling $3,240,000 from the Vance logistics escrow accounts. He routed these funds through a shell entity named Apex Horizons LLC to service illegal offshore gambling debts in Macau and Costa Rica.”

The board members gasped in outrage.

“Furthermore,” Prosecutor Karen Vance added, “Preston Vance forged Clara Vance’s digital authentication certificates on three federal tax schedules to make it appear that Clara was the authorizing officer for these illicit transfers. Had Clara not demanded the security footage on Saturday night, Preston’s planned tax fraud would have triggered an indictment against Clara within forty-eight hours.”

Arthur buried his face in his hands, groaning in profound shame.

“In light of these findings,” I spoke, my voice commanding absolute authority across the room. “I move for the immediate, permanent termination of Preston Vance from all corporate offices, the complete forfeiture of his executive stock options, and the total restructuring of Vance Enterprises under the Sophie Vance Irrevocable Heritage Trust.”

The board members raised their hands in unanimous consent.

“Motion carries,” the corporate secretary recorded. “Clara Vance is hereby appointed Executive Chairwoman and Chief Executive Officer of Vance Enterprises, effective immediately.”

The company my grandfather had founded fifty years earlier was finally in rightful, honorable hands.
