Chapter 5 - The Unlocked Device

Detective Marcus Vance walked over to where Preston knelt on the floor and stood directly over him.

“Preston Vance,” Detective Vance said, his voice cold as winter ice. “Under Illinois Criminal Code Section 26-1, fabricating false evidence to initiate the unlawful arrest of a minor constitutes Aggravated False Reporting and Criminal Malicious Prosecution.”

“Wait! It was just a family dispute!” Preston cried, scrambling backward on the floor. “You can’t arrest me for a family prank!”

“A prank that summoned eight armed police officers to a public venue,” Detective Vance replied. “Hand over the device.”

Detective Vance took the titanium phone from the table. As he tapped the screen, the notification center illuminated with multiple priority alerts that had arrived during the commotion.

Because Preston had intentionally left the device unlocked to allow officers to 'verify' ownership, the active screen displayed three incoming messages from a secure financial platform:

Alert 1: Wire transfer of $1,200,000 to Apex Offshore Holdings (Cayman Islands) pending secondary authorization.

Alert 2: Internal ledger reconciliation complete: $3,200,000 diverted from Vance Enterprises Logistics Escrow.

Alert 3: Encrypted memo: 'Ensure Clara Vance’s digital signature is attached to the tax filings before Monday morning.'

Detective Vance’s eyes narrowed into slits of steel. He showed the screen to Special Agent Miller of the Financial Crimes Division, who had accompanied the patrol units.

“Mr. Vance,” Agent Miller said, stepping forward with an evidence pouch. “It appears your phone doesn't just prove you framed a child. It contains active digital logs of multi-million-dollar corporate embezzlement and federal identity fraud.”

Preston’s eyes widened in sheer, naked terror.

For two years, Preston had been systematically draining Vance Enterprises’ commercial accounts to fund his private sports betting debts and speculative crypto investments. His master plan was to publicly humiliate and arrest me on his wedding day, strip me of my voting shares on Monday’s board meeting, and forge my signature on the fraudulent tax ledgers before federal auditors arrived.

He thought framing Sophie would be the crowning move of his corporate ascent.

Instead, his own phone had become the open vault of his criminal empire.
