Chapter 4 - The Bride’s Veil Drops

For five agonizing seconds, not a single person breathed.
Then, a collective, deafening gasp echoed across the two hundred guests. Socialites stared at Preston with pure, unadulterated revulsion. Corporate executives shook their heads in utter disbelief.
My mother, Victoria, collapsed backward into an empty chair, clutching her chest, her face turning an ashen shade of grey. “Preston... what did you do?”
My father, Arthur, stood paralyzed, his mouth opening and closing like a fish stranded on dry sand. “You... you put the phone in her pocket?”
Sophie looked up at the giant screen, then looked at me, her big brown eyes shining through dry tears. “Mommy... the TV showed it! I was telling the truth!”
“You were always telling the truth, my brave girl,” I whispered, kissing her forehead as proud tears slipped down my cheeks.
At the front of the ballroom, Julianna Sterling took two slow steps backward, away from Preston.
“Julianna, wait!” Preston stammered, his voice cracking in absolute panic as he reached out for her hand. “It’s not what it looks like! Clara was going to block my executive appointment at Monday’s board meeting! I had to discredit her! I had to protect our future!”
Julianna looked down at his outstretched hand as if it were dripping with venom.
With steady, deliberate movements, Julianna reached behind her head, unpinned her floor-length lace veil, and let it drop onto the champagne carpet. Then, she pulled the five-carat diamond engagement ring from her finger and hurled it directly into Preston’s face.
Clink.
The platinum ring bounced off Preston’s cheek and rolled under the edge of the cake table.
“You are a disgusting, pathetic coward,” Julianna said, her voice shaking with righteous fury. “You used an innocent eight-year-old child to stage a petty corporate coup on our wedding day. There is no wedding. There is no marriage. And there is no alliance with the Sterling family.”
Richard Sterling stepped forward, towering over Preston with lethal disdain. “My security team will escort you out of my sight before I lose my temper. The Sterling Foundation withdraws its $40 million maritime investment from Vance Enterprises effective immediately.”

Preston dropped to his knees on the carpet, begging frantically: “Mr. Sterling! Julianna! Please! We can fix this! Mother, tell them!”
Victoria only looked away, burying her face in her hands, weeping with bitter, irreversible humiliation.
