Chapter 3 - The Screen in the Ballroom

The ballroom grew unnervingly quiet as hotel technical engineers hurried to the main audiovisual booth beside the orchestra stage.
Two massive ninety-inch high-definition presentation screens—originally installed to display childhood photo slideshows of Preston and Julianna—flickered to life with the crisp blue logo of The Grand Monarch Security Grid.
“Displaying Camera 4B—East Ballroom Wing,” the technician announced over the sound system.
Preston took a hurried step toward the technician’s booth. “Wait! This is a private family event! You have no right to broadcast security feeds to my guests!”
“Sit down, Preston,” Richard Sterling, the bride’s formidable father, commanded from the front row. His voice was deep, authoritative, and accustomed to commanding boardrooms. “If your niece is a thief, we will see it. If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear.”
Preston froze in his tracks, his hands trembling as he shoved them into his tuxedo pockets.
The screen illuminated with crystal-clear 4K footage timestamped 7:18 PM.
The video showed the bustling ballroom. At Table 14, I stood up, excused myself, and walked toward the corridor leading to the ladies’ lounge. Little Sophie remained alone at the table, quietly opening her box of crayons and humming as she colored her picture.
At 7:22 PM, the camera captured Preston walking away from the head table.
He looked over both shoulders, checking the room with an anxious, darting gaze. He held his titanium smartphone in his right hand, concealed under a white cloth napkin.
He approached Table 14 from behind Sophie’s chair.
The camera zoomed in automatically with motion-tracking clarity.
Preston leaned down, smiled with artificial warmth, and reached over Sophie’s shoulder as if affectionately patting her head. With his left hand, he distracted the child by pointing toward the ice sculpture across the room.
With his right hand, under the cover of the napkin, he slid the heavy titanium phone directly into Sophie’s small cardigan pocket.
He stepped back, adjusted his cufflinks, and checked his watch.

Then the video jumped to 7:27 PM—the exact moment Preston took the microphone, announced his phone was missing, marched straight to Sophie, and feigned shock as he pulled the device from her jacket.
The ballroom plunged into a suffocating, horrified silence.
