Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT THE HOSPITAL WENT DARK

The first warning came as a note.
Laurel found it beneath her windshield wiper after a late shift.
STOP ASKING ABOUT THE HARBOR.
No signature.
No explanation.
She photographed it.
Called Rebecca.
Then contacted the police.
The second warning came two nights later.
Grey Haven Memorial experienced a power interruption during a severe storm.
Backup systems activated.
Emergency lighting came on.
Patients remained safe.
But Laurel noticed something strange.
A man wearing a maintenance uniform stood near the records department.
She didn't recognize him.
When she approached, he turned away.
“Excuse me.”
He kept walking.
Laurel followed at a distance.
Then saw him enter a restricted stairwell.
She called hospital security.
The man disappeared before guards reached the area.
Later, security footage showed him carrying a small equipment case.
The incident was reported.
Laurel sat in the staff lounge afterward, shaking.
She called Weston.
He answered.
“Laurel?”
“Someone came into the hospital.”
His voice changed.
“Are you safe?”
“Yes.”
“Where are you?”
“At work.”
“Stay with security. I'm coming.”

Laurel closed her eyes.
For the first time, she was afraid the truth about her father might cost someone else their life.
