Chapter 5 - THE NURSE WHO WOULDN'T WALK AWAY

Laurel returned to Grey Haven Memorial the next day.
She was determined to resume her ordinary life.
But ordinary life had changed.
Her sister called repeatedly.
Weston's photograph sat inside her bag.
And every time she passed the hospital's windows, she remembered the rain.
Dr. Hannah Mercer, her supervisor, noticed immediately.
“You look exhausted.”
“I had a rough night.”
“I heard.”
Laurel stopped.
“Who told you?”
“Emergency services documented your collapse. Are you okay?”
Laurel nodded.
Then hesitated.
“I need a few days off.”
Hannah studied her.
“Take them.”
Laurel looked surprised.
Hannah smiled sadly.
“You've spent years taking care of everyone else. It's time you let someone take care of you.”
Laurel almost laughed.
If only Hannah knew.
She had been rescued by a man rumored to control half the coast's criminal underworld.
And he might know something about her father's death.
That evening, Laurel called Weston.
He answered immediately.
“Are you all right?”
“I want the truth.”
A pause.
“About your father?”
“Yes.”
May you like
Weston exhaled.
“Then we need to talk.”
