Chapter 3 - THE MAN WHO KNEW HER FATHER'S NAME

Breakfast arrived on a silver tray.
Eggs.
Toast.
Fruit.
Coffee.
Laurel stared at the food.
“This is ridiculous.”
A woman in a gray cardigan smiled.
“Mr. Vale insisted you eat.”
“Mr. Vale isn't my endocrinologist.”
The woman laughed.
“I'm Mrs. Elwood. My husband manages the estate.”
Laurel softened.
“Thank you.”
Mrs. Elwood placed the tray beside her.
“There's also a car waiting whenever you're ready.”
Laurel ate.
Checked her glucose.
Called Claire.
Then asked to see Weston.
He was in a library overlooking the sea.
Books lined the walls.
A fire burned in the hearth.
He stood when she entered.
“How are you feeling?”
“Embarrassed.”
“That's not a medical diagnosis.”
She smiled despite herself.
Then grew serious.
“Why did you help me?”
He looked at her for a long moment.
“Because you needed help.”
“That's not the whole answer.”
“No.”
She waited.
Weston walked toward a cabinet.
He opened a drawer and removed a photograph.
He handed it to her.
Laurel stared.
Two men stood beside a fishing boat.
One was a younger Weston.
The other—
Her breath caught.
“My father.”
Weston nodded.
“Daniel Winthorne.”
Laurel looked up.
“You knew him?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
May you like
Weston's expression darkened.
“He saved my life.”
