Chapter 12 - THE MAN WHO FINALLY CONFESSED

Weston came to Laurel's apartment one evening.

He looked exhausted.

She let him in.

They sat at her kitchen table.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Then Weston said:

“I need to tell you something.”

Laurel looked up.

“When your father died, I suspected the official report wasn't complete.”

Her heart stopped.

“What?”

“I was young. My father controlled the company. I didn't have proof.”

“But you suspected.”

“Yes.”

Laurel stared.

“And you said nothing?”

Weston closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

The silence between them became unbearable.

Laurel stood.

“Get out.”

He looked at her.

“Laurel—”

“Get out.”

He rose slowly.

“I won't ask you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

He nodded.

At the door, he stopped.

“I've given the investigators everything I have. Including records that may implicate me in other crimes.”

Laurel said nothing.

Weston left.

She locked the door.

Then sat on the floor and cried.

May you like

Not because he had lied about everything.

But because he had told her enough truth to make the betrayal hurt.
