Chapter 6 - THE FILE LOCKED IN THE SAFE

Weston invited Laurel back to the estate.

This time, she drove herself.

He met her in the library.

A thick folder lay on the table.

She stared at it.

“What is that?”

“Everything I could find about Daniel Winthorne.”

She opened it.

Employment records.

Medical reports.

Shipping logs.

Photographs.

Then she found a handwritten note.

Her father's handwriting.

She recognized it immediately.

If something happens to me, check the harbor inspection records.

Laurel looked up.

“Where did you get this?”

Weston hesitated.

“It was found among documents my father kept.”

“Why didn't you tell us?”

His jaw tightened.

“Because I didn't know it existed until after my father died.”

Laurel turned another page.

A shipping manifest.

Dated three weeks before her father's accident.

Several cargo containers were listed under false descriptions.

Laurel frowned.

“What was in them?”

Weston looked at her.

“I don't know.”

She stared.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

He leaned forward.

“I expect you to question everything.”

Laurel looked down at the papers.

For years, she had believed her father died because of a storm.

Now she was beginning to suspect he died because he had seen something he wasn't supposed to see.
