Chapter 8 - THE RECORDING INSIDE THE MUSIC BOX
Serena had kept one thing from her old life.
Not the gold band.
Not the photographs.
A small wooden music box.
Damen had given it to her on their first anniversary.
She had hidden it in a storage unit in Gary.
After their reunion, she retrieved it.
Inside was a folded piece of paper.
And a small recording device.
Damen stared.
"Where did you get that?"
Serena swallowed.
"The man at the bridge."
He looked at her.
"What?"
She nodded.
"He slipped it into my bag."
Damen picked up the device.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't know what it was."
They listened.
A man's voice filled the room.
Vittorio.
Then another.
Alessandra's father, Carlo Giordano.
They discussed the Moretti empire.
The proposed marriage alliance.
And Serena.
Vittorio's voice was unmistakable.
"Once she's gone, Damen will be easier to manage."
Carlo answered:
"And the child?"
A pause.
Then Vittorio said:
"She won't survive long enough for that to matter."
Serena covered her mouth.
Damen went completely still.
The room seemed to freeze.
His uncle had known.
About the pregnancy.
About the threat.
