Chapter 10 - THE MAN WHO SAVED HER LIFE

Gabriel Russo was found in a small town outside Milwaukee.
He had been living under an assumed name.
When investigators approached him, he agreed to speak.
Damen met him in a secure conference room with attorneys present.
Gabriel was older than Serena remembered.
Tired.
Wary.
He looked at Damen.
"I knew you'd come eventually."
Damen stared.
"Why did you help her?"
Gabriel looked down.
"My wife was pregnant when she died."
Silence.
"Years ago, I followed an order I should have refused."
He swallowed.
"Someone got hurt."
Damen said nothing.
Gabriel continued.
"When Vittorio told me to kill Serena, I couldn't do it."
His eyes filled.
"So I gave her a chance."
Damen looked at him.
"You let me believe she was dead."
Gabriel nodded.
"I know."
"Eight months."
"I know."
Damen's hands trembled.
Gabriel looked up.
"If I'd told you, Vittorio would have known."
Damen stared at him.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then Damen said:
"You saved my son."
Gabriel nodded.
"And your wife."
May you like
Damen swallowed.
"Thank you."
