Chapter 6 - THE FIANCÉE WHO WASN'T THE ENEMY

Alessandra Giordano called Damen the following morning.
He answered.
She didn't waste time.
"Is she really your wife?"
"Yes."
"And the child?"
"Mine."
Silence.
Then:
"Are you going back to her?"
Damen closed his eyes.
"I don't know what she'll allow."
Alessandra laughed bitterly.
"That's not what I asked."
He swallowed.
"Yes."
Another silence.
Then she whispered:
"At least you're honest."
Damen looked down.
"I'm sorry."
She exhaled.
"Don't be sorry for loving your wife."
He stared.
Alessandra continued.
"Be sorry for agreeing to marry someone you didn't love."
He closed his eyes.
"You're right."
She paused.
"There's something else."
Damen straightened.
"What?"
"My father knew about Serena."
His blood turned cold.
"What?"
Alessandra's voice trembled.
"He knew she was alive."
Damen stood.
"How?"
"I found correspondence."
He gripped the phone.
"From whom?"
She swallowed.
"Your uncle."
Damen went still.
"Vittorio?"
"Yes."
Silence.
