Chapter 9 - The Federal Hammer at Foley Square

Six months later, Courtroom 4B of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York at Foley Square was packed to capacity with corporate executives, reporters, and former employees of Hawthorne Leisure.

Chief Judge Evelyn Harrison presided over the final sentencing hearing in the matter of The United States versus Charles Richardson and Julian Richardson.

Charles and Julian sat at the defense table in orange prison jumpsuits, their wrists and ankles bound in steel chains. Charles was gaunt and trembling; Julian sat with his head buried in his hands, unable to look in my direction.

Judge Harrison adjusted her glasses and addressed the court with thunderous moral authority.

“The defendants engaged in a calculated, predatory campaign of systemic financial fraud, grand larceny, and corporate extortion, exploiting federal banking protections to fund a life of unearned luxury,” Judge Harrison declared.

She brought down her heavy wooden gavel with a resounding crack.

“Charles Richardson is hereby sentenced to eighteen years in federal prison at FCI Fairton, with full financial restitution of $42 million. Julian Richardson, for his direct complicity in wire fraud and identity theft, is sentenced to seven years in federal custody.”

Julian let out a ragged sob, collapsing onto the table as federal marshals stepped forward and secured their transport chains.

As they were escorted through the reinforced side doors toward the holding cells, Julian turned his tear-stained face toward the gallery.

I sat in the front row, flanked by Kira Marquez and my grandmother’s longtime friends.

There was no anger in my eyes. There was no petty desire for revenge. There was only the calm, absolute closure of a woman who had defended her dignity, exposed the pretenders, and restored truth to the harbor.
